Alphonse Nkurunziza

Transport Planning Consultant- Kigali, Institute for Transport and Development Policy (ITDP)

Before joining ITDP, Alphonse Nkurunziza has worked as the City Engineer in the City of Kigali from 2014 to 2018. He coordinated engineering, urban planning, and environmental management activities of three key city departments: Infrastructure, Urban Planning, and Construction; One Stop Centre; and City Master Plan Implementation Inspection. Alphonse was an Associate Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Director of Research at the University of Kigali as well as a Senior Lecturer for Quantitative Research Methods in late 2018. He also was a Visiting Senior Lecturer of Urban Structure, Transport Planning, and Engineering in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geomatics Engineering at the College of Science and Technology, University of Rwanda as well as an affiliated researcher in the Department of Urban & Regional Planning at the University of Twente, the Netherlands. He holds a master of science degree with distinction in urban planning and management and a PhD in transport planning from the University of Twente, the Netherlands. He also holds a bachelor of science degree with distinction in civil and environmental engineering from the College of Science and Technology, the University of Rwanda. His areas of interest in professional practice and scientific research include sustainable urban mobility and in urban land use planning.
