Eckart Würzner is the mayor of Heidelberg. Before taking office in December 2006, he served as Heidelberg’s deputy mayor responsible for the environment for six years. At local, national and international level, he continuously promotes climate action with determination and vigour. Eckart Würzner has been president of the European Energy Cities network since 2006. At the United Nations’ Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS) in 2015, he received an award for his outstanding commitment.
“Think globally, act locally: When it comes to climate protection, nations, states, municipalities and civil society must collaborate closely. Municipalities set an example for successful climate protection. Regional municipal utilities, ambitious local energy standards for construction projects, ecological mobility concepts and climate adaptation strategies are success factors on the road to carbon neutrality. I look forward to the dialogue and hope that the international conference in Heidelberg will transport many successful strategies into the world.”
